The Oasis Restaurant will be closed for at least a couple of weeks after an early morning fire ripped through the ceiling Thursday.
Fire Chief James Blanchard said firefighters responded to an alarm at 2:16 a.m.

A bill signed by Gov. Rod Blagojevich this month allows fire protection district trustees in Illinois to offer financial incentives to homeowners who install automatic fire sprinkler systems in their homes.

Chief Dan Hermes of the Pleasantview Fire Protection District and the rest of the Illinois Association of Fire Protection Districts began working more than a year ago to put the measure through. Their motivation, Hermes said, is simple.

“Sprinkler systems save lives,” he said.

The law allows individual boards of trustees to determine the grant amounts in accordance with their own district’s budget and the impact sprinkler-protected homes will have on their districts. Local chiefs seem to have no doubt that more sprinkler systems would save lives, limit property damage and eventually would lower their fire protection costs. But finding the money to start up a grant program might be a problem.

“Our tax rate keeps getting lower and lower every year,” said Darien-Woodridge Fire Protection District Chief Wayne Messenger. He said he backs any action that gets more sprinklers in homes, but the district budget has no wiggle room to reward safe homeowners.

“I don’t see us doing anything in the near future,” he said.

Hermes said the first step was to get the law passed. Now, his district and others will look into how it will be funded. He hopes to have some concrete ideas to pose to trustees within a couple of months.

Statistics show that 80 percent of fire deaths occur in homes, yet very few have fire sprinkler systems. Such devices are more commonly seen in apartment buildings, hotels, hospitals and schools.

Hermes said fire sprinkler systems are more affordable, more aesthetically pleasing and more effective than ever, yet only a handful of homes in Burr Ridge are equipped with them.

“They cost less than carpeting,” he said.

A downtown Las Vegas hotel was evacuated this morning after someone moving furniture accidentally activated an automatic fire sprinkler system.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue said the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino, 1 Fremont St., was evacuated at about 9:30 a.m. after a fire sprinkler head was activated on the hotel’s second floor. Firefighters quickly discovered there was no fire, then assisted hotel employees with the cleanup of water.

Guests at the hotel were allowed to return to their rooms shortly after the evacuation, fire officials said.

No one was injured and there were no reports of damage.

Nationwide, more than 4,000 people die in fires each year.

Home fire sprinklers can contain and may even extinguish a fire in less time than it would take the fire department to arrive on the scene.

Fire sprinklers are not a new idea. Developed in the late 19th century, sprinkler systems protect much of the world’s commercial risks. Now, similar technology is being installed in homes where, unfortunately, most of the fire deaths occur.

Fire sprinklers save lives, reduce property loss and can even help cut homeowner insurance premiums. Installing both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system reduces the risk of death in a home fire by 82 percent, as opposed to having neither.

The Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC), which provided the above statistics, is on a mission to increase awareness of the availability and live-saving value of fire sprinkler systems in new homes. It is also possible to retrofit existing homes.

The HFSC wants to also put to rest some myths about home fire sprinklers, including:

* Sprinklers do not operate all at once. Only the sprinkler closest to the fire will activate, spraying water directly on the fire. Ninety percent of fires are contained by the operation of just one sprinkler,

* Home fire sprinklers use only a fraction of the water used by fire department hoses. This means a fire may result in less water damage to your home and belongings, and

* Home fire sprinklers seldom leak or accidentally discharge (odds are one in 16 million). They are inconspicuous and can be mounted flush with walls or ceilings. And, on average, home fire sprinkler systems add 1-1.5 percent to the total building cost in new construction.

Smoke detectors are designed to detect a fire and signal a warning. The addition of fire sprinklers to your home could help keep your family, property and the lives of firefighters safer.

Sprink Tech Company, Inc., a leading provider of sprinkler systems for educational, commercial, residential and retail clients throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, has been contracted to design and install the fire sprinkler system at Schoolhouse 77 in Roxbury, MA

Schoolhouse 77 is approximately a 150 unit, HUD-assisted multi-family housing development. Dell Brook Construction out of Braintree is the general contractor for the job. Sprink Tech will be designing and installing fire sprinkler systems at buildings located at 60 Brookledge; 610 Cummin Hwy.; 6 Kenilworth and 37 Williams St. in Roxbury.

Sprink Tech will utilize their state-of-the-art software program to design the fire sprinkler system and prefabricated pipe will be used in the installation. Sprink Tech
